Study Abroad in Brazil this summer!

This Roger Williams University faculty-led 4-credit program combines journalism and service learning explores Brazil from the perspective of remote communities in the mountain region of Minas Gerais. In their studies of social justice, students will discover how social factors such as race/ethnicity, gender, class, and regional histories affect how communities gain access to or control over resources. Students will produce multimedia news reports about local communities, hear from local experts, visit key cultural and historical sites, and participate in fair trade service learning social justice projects.

The course runs from May 18 to June 11, 2015 at a cost of $3,205 plus airfare (meals are included). Space is limited and Portuguese proficiency is NOT required. Applications are due Monday Feb 16. When: May 18 through June 11 (May 18-June 8, 2015 in Brazil + one week online).

Where: Minas Gerais, Brazil.

What: 4-credits, including one course in Journalism (led by Dr. Paola Prado), and a one-credit course in service-learning led by Amizade Global Service Learning Director Nathan Darity

Academic Goals of the Program:

  • Learn about the environment & human culture in Brazil
  • Learn to report accurately from the field, producing stories about environmental issues
  • Contribute to environmental and social justice movements through service work
  • Visit culturally and historically significant sites in the fifth largest country on earth
